
On this site, I’ve sung Wé Ani’s praises many times.[1] I won’t repeat here what I’ve written.
She doesn’t have a beautiful voice, but rather many beautiful voices. Every performance is a study in a specific texture. Your interest and time budget either allow you to pursue the evidence for my opinion or they don’t. If they don’t, then the following words are just so much blah-blah. I composed this essay for the record, not to convince you of anything.
There is no generic Wé Ani. The gift she bestows in “Scars To Your Beautiful” is different from that of (for example, and in no particular order) “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” or “Shallow,” or “You Know I’m No Good” or “Scared To Live.” (I’ll arbitrarily stop there.)[2] Discovering her music made me feel like a kid again.
Which is why writing this was difficult.
